Every chubby person has been on some kind of a diet; if not a diet they have been on weight-loss programmes of some sort or the other. Unfortunately, 90% of the people will tell you that they gain double the weight much faster than it took them to shed the kg.
The reason for this is simple. Obese people have to understand that to shed even a single kg means that they have to make drastic lifestyle changes.
Now, comes the horror of things! There is a reason why we are fat. We love food; we live to eat food. God didn’t put us on this earth to work as a slave. God put us on this beautiful planet to enjoy. Which primitive man spent his time toiling for others? How did he spend his time?
The answer is simple. Looking for food. If the primary function of mankind was to work, God would not have given us a stomach. He probably would have given us two extra hands so that we could do more work.
So, now we have established that we were put on Earth to enjoy its bounty of treasure – fruits, dry fruits and vegetables and occasionally meat. Of course, doctors and health experts are going to jump right in here and say that healthy eating is the way forward. Unfortunately, these people have not heard of the adage: Anything good in life is either illegal, immoral or fattening!
Given this wise saying, how does one work around the gag of good food and yet not gain weight? Definitely an impossible task. However, there are ways to trick the body into believing that you are eating junk food and everything that is fattening. Just make a few tweaks here and there. This is what you need to do.
Make it a rule to never eat any cereal/protein/sweet after 7:30 pm. There must be at least four hours of the gap before you eat and sleep. For those who are working and going to the office, this rule may appear to be impossible to follow but the truth is that once you make up your mind, it is a lot easier to achieve and do than it seems.
For those who are working from home, it is easy. Those going to the office, carry your food – simple. Have a bowl full of salad; add plenty of cucumbers, tomatoes, and lettuce. You can add an apple.
Add a dash of lemon and sprinkle of salt and pepper and lo and behold you have a tasty dish to fill you up. Still hungry, have salt lassi. Still hungry, add five almonds to the salad. Still hungry, have a big bowl of veggie soup sans the potatoes and corn starch.
Non-vegetarian people may be tempted to put grilled chicken. This is a no-no. Remember the cardinal rule – no cereal or protein after 7:30 pm. If you manage to eat all the above-mentioned items, there is no way you will sleep on an empty stomach.
Eating dal chawal and veggies – a typical Indian dinner is something that we have conditioned ourselves to eat. Once you break the pattern, you will find that you sleep better and wake up energized.
Since you have practically not eaten cereal for almost 24 hours, you are bound to be hungry. After your morning cup of tea – preferably with gur as sweetener, comes breakfast. If you eat egg, have an omelette of two egg whites, a glass of milk or cold coffee with no sugar.
You can substitute this with sprouts/ besan cheela/moong dal cheela/poha/upma/2 idlis with chutney. That is definitely a great way to start your day on a happy note. With your belly full, you are set to face the world. If you feel hungry at 11, have a fruit. Believe it or not, you can definitely have a mango!
Now comes the tough part. Lunch – what to eat? Eat what you want in moderation. Have two rotis, have a plateful of cucumber and tomato salad, have a medium size Katori of curd, a medium-size Katori of dal and a Katori of veggies. If you are a non-vegetarian – have two small pieces of chicken curry. You can even have 2-3 tablespoons full of rice!
Allow yourself cheat days. This is the best part of the entire exercise to make lifestyle changes to your diet. To begin with, you can give yourself two days when you can eat junk food. Yes, you read that right. You can eat junk food.
This means fries, burgers, pizza, butter chicken, dal makhani, butter naan, stuffed parantha and even sweets. But the cardinal rule in Step 1 remains; no cereal of protein after 7:30 pm. Now, you may wonder how this is a cheating day. Well, you are allowing yourself to eat whatever the hell you want for lunch.
Now, you will wonder and say that this is what you eat daily. Not true. Keep a diary and note down everything you eat for a week. You will be amazed at how much food you eat. Yes, we are all guilty of doing this. Sadly, for those who are obese, we need to cut down on the in-between munchies – namkeens and biscuits that we reach for. If we manage to eliminate this, we will end up eating healthy and slowly but steadily, there will be weight loss.
It is common sense that when you’re constantly surrounded by food, you tend to eat more. But one thing that hasn’t been clear until recently was how seeing food (visibility) and having it within reach (proximity) can influence unconscious eating. Developmental psychologists tell you that if you have to go out of your way to get food, you’ll remember eating it. If the food is right there within arms-reach, you’ll munch away and more easily forget it.
To explore the influence of food proximity and visibility on eating behavior, an experiment was set up with 40 women staff members from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champain. The subjects were not told it was a weight loss or calorie-related study. They were told that they would be given a free candy dish filled with chocolates and they’d be contacted and surveyed about their candy preferences. They were also told not to share the candies, take them home or move the dish.
Participants were divided into four groups:
1) Proximate and visible (can see and reach)
2) Proximate and non-visible (can reach but not see)
3) Less proximate and visible (can see but can’t reach)
4) Less proximate and non-visible (can’t see, and can’t reach)
The results were amazing. The visibility and proximity of the candy dish influenced the subject’s perceptions. Regardless of whether participants could actually see the chocolates, if the candies were sitting on the desk (as opposed to being a mere two meters away), they were rated as more attention-attracting and difficult to resist. Candies in the clear containers were also rated as more difficult to resist and more attention attracting.
Now you know what to do to reduce temptation and successfully stick with your programme: If you can’t keep it out of your office or house, keep it out of sight and out of arm’s reach.
There are no shorts to a weight-loss programme. Don’t lose heart if you don’t lose any kgs in the first few months. Patience is a virtue. Slow and steady wins the race!
