Believe it or not but drawing is not about whether you have the right tools but about what ideas you have that you want to put on a piece of paper or the canvas. Of course, it doesn’t mean that the person who can’t draw a straight line can become a master artist overnight but it does mean that practice makes a man perfect and in due time you can draw – as a hobby – to begin with.

So, what is it that you need to bring out the artist in you? Here’s what you need to do

Use the right tools

Drawing is all about ideas and tools. The right tools can make a difference when it comes to techniques or the use of certain mediums. The observations make the artist pen his work best. No matter how experienced or how novice you are, drawing instruments are essential. Without these tools and accessories, you may be unable to start a sketching mission.

Draw familiar objects

It is always easier to draw what you know, rather than what you see. Remember, sketching everyday objects is a practice with both line and composition. It makes everything else easier. Working from imagination is great practice, but familiarity with objects will help you draw crisp edges. Drawing things can sometimes help us build our confidence or teach us new techniques. We sometimes draw things just for fun. Drawing can be both.

Train your brain to see things differently.

Some people are born good at drawing. But you can train yourself. Train your brain to see things differently in order to be able to draw better. When you draw you have to transform perceptions into lines and shapes. That is when the magic happens in the brain. It’s a great way to practice the skill with which you perceive and express the world around you. When you draw objects in 3D space, your brain knows what’s inside and outside the box. This is why good artists draw circles and squares and triangles and share a wide variety of objects.

Follow composition rules

This is about taking an idea or image and arranging it in a way that makes sense. It’s about thinking about how things fit together. Just as we arrange our desks in a way that works best for us, we can arrange our bodies in a way that makes us most effective. Focus on the main figures when drawing a portrait or a sketch. Concentrate on how your eyes move around, looking forward and backwards. Keep in mind the depth and the foreground/background texture as well. Here are a few rules:

Rule of thirds

This is a guideline to help you draw interesting and balanced images. It’s based on an orthogonal grid which allows you to place solid object parts at the boundaries of areas you want to feel the most spacious. A boundary has three elements: Vertical, horizontal and diagonal. When placed correctly it creates an area that feels larger than it actually is while at the same time being intimate.

Rule of odds

It is used to help you assemble a better image. In an image with a lot of moving parts, it can be difficult to determine which part is most important. The relationship between each part and its relative importance will help you determine how important a particular portion should be considered while drawing.

Rule of space

The principle of the rule is to separate objects from each other with visual space or negative space.

Simplification

In art, simplification cannot be understated. If you want to learn how to draw better, you need to understand the basics of how light works and how colours work together to create pictures. Simplicity doesn’t mean cleanliness either; you don’t want to draw cluttered pictures. Draw clean lines, try not to mix up your colours and keep everything simple.

Shallow depth of field

This is a special kind of technique in which the foreground and background are not as clearly defined. This is the opposite of a dramatic perspective. It is used to blend two images together — creating an interesting effect when used effectively.

Find a focal point

Since drawing is majorly about observing, it’s natural to be distracted by the details. To help avoid this, add a focal point to your drawing that will draw your attention away from the background. Reference photos are very important. Find one focal point for each. The best way to figure that out is to sketch from photos. The focal point is where you want all the visual attention to go when people look at your drawing. It is usually towards the centre of your drawing.

Draw from imagination

Starting with basic shapes is a great way to get started drawing without feeling overwhelmed. It’s easy to create unique drawings. Start by just sketching basic shapes from imagination. When you draw from imagination you can’t use real-life images as references. Imagination drawing gives you the freedom to express. Most great illustrators and comic artists draw or sketch from their imaginations.

Deconstruct the subject

Deconstruct the subject you’re trying to capture into simpler forms. If you want to draw a person, start by drawing a handful of stick figures, then add a couple of cylinders and some cones and connect everything with lines. If you want to draw a landscape, draw the horizon line, one or two trees, and maybe one building then work out from there. The world is made up of basic shapes, edges, outlines and fills.

Use scales, patterns and grids

These are tools for making your drawings better. They can be used separately or together. What scale you use depends on the size of the objects you’re trying to draw. The larger the object, the smaller the grid-scale.

Work with values

In art, values can be thought of as the relative light and dark within an area of drawn space. The lightest value is white, the darkest is black. All other values and colours lie somewhere between these two extremes. Value is the most important element. It is also one of the trickiest to master. Make sure your value scale is right. Do a rough sketch first with simple shapes that have high and low lights. View the scene from different angles.

Take a course

Take a drawing class online or even a workshop. A good teacher can show you the techniques. A good idea is to learn from someone who already knows how to draw well.

Don’t compare yourself another artist

Never compare yourself with another artist. Do your best. This way you will be able to discover your strengths and weaknesses. As you self-evaluate your drawings, it makes you a better artist each time. Remember, every drawing is different from the others. Each drawing is unique, there can’t be a universal guideline.

Next time you have time and you pick up a paper and a pencil, follow a sequence of thoughts. Break down a scene and analyze it. Think of how you can make it better? Drawing has an air of mystery about it. It’s about letting your imagination run wild. So, let it soar!

While almost all green plants can be kept indoors, some plants need more attention than others which can be cumbersome if you have a busy schedule. But that doesn’t mean you can’t surround yourself with greenery. Let’s look at some best indoor plants for a home in India.

Rubber tree plant

It is fairly easy to maintain but is fussy when it comes to the amount of water it needs. Here is what you need to know if you have this plant. Rubber plants are rainforest specimens. While they need consistent moistness, they don’t want it to be soggy. Ensure that the pot the plant is in has adequate draining holes.

Use a dish under the pot lined with pebbles to catch extra water. This will keep the roots from sitting in water but provide the humidity as the water evaporates.

Croton plant

Its beautifully patterned leaves can brighten any space. Now that the rains are here in full force, it is important to ensure that you take care of all your plants. Overwatering can lead to root rot. An important thing to keep in mind is that the pot is well-drained. There is moisture in the air, overwatering will harm the plant. Croton also needs at least six to seven hours of sunshine but excess heat will damage its leaves. Try and keep the plant either East or West facing to make sure that the leaves don’t lose their colour.

English Ivy

It looks pretty and while it may look like it is an easy plant to look after, it is not the case. Like any other plant, this plant too will rot and its leaves will turn brown if you overwater them. Before you water it, check the soil. If it is moist, don’t water it. Make sure that the soil is loose and is kept in a well-drained pot. The plant grows in bright light but it is away from direct sunlight. It is a beautiful plan that can be kept inside the home; potting it in a hanging basket is an excellent way to enjoy the beauty of this plant.

Fern

The delicate curled leaves that unfurl into long, lacy fronds look pretty. Go into the forest and you will find ferns carpeting the floor. They also make a great houseplant. They can grow in any kind of pot — clay to hanging baskets to ceramic and don’t require full sun to thrive.

But Indian weather is different. A plant that may live happily in any other environment needs a lot of care here. They love moisture. During the rainy season make sure you don’t overwater the plant or the roots will rot. You can even spray water on the leaves to lock the moisture in. You can keep this plant in the bathroom or even the kitchen.

Green Aralia

One of the most important things to keep in mind if you have a green aralia is that it has to be kept away from cold drafts and windows during the winter months to ensure that it thrives. It needs a feed once every other month during the spring. During the summer months, the plant needs liquid fertiliser. However, be careful if you buy this plant; it is mildly toxic to humans and pets. Ingestion can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

They are best as landscape plants. While watering aralia which is indoors, deep water is only when the soil is nearly dry. One of the most important things to keep in mind if you have a green aralia is that it has to be kept away from cold drafts and windows during the winter months to ensure that it thrives.

Pitcher plant

It is not always possible to ensure that the plant that you bring is going to live. Hence, it is important to take care of it properly. Let’s take the pitcher plant. So how does one take care of it if one wants to keep it indoors even if it is a carnivorous plant?

Depending on the species, some require full sunlight and those that originate in the floor of the rainforest may need filtered light. It requires moist soil, and keeps the potting soil moist, but not soggy. Allow the pot to drain thoroughly after watering and never let the pot stand in water or the roots will rot.

Why we celebrate mothers day?

It is said that the need to celebrate this day arose in the 1900s. Back then a daughter – Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis – to honour the sacrifices made by the mothers made for their children started this holiday.

It is said that Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, the US which serves as the International Mother’s Day Shrine today.

Did you also know that different countries celebrate this day in different months? Some countries celebrate this day in March. Mother’s Day in Egypt is celebrated on March 21, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. In Georgia Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 3.

In some countries, the date is adopted to signify religion, like Virgin Mary Day in Catholic countries. Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia’s Mother’s Day is a fixed date, commemorating a battle in which women participated to defend their children. Or in Russia where it is celebrated as International Women’s Day instead of Mother’s Day.

In India, the concept of celebrating Mother’s Day is new. This could be because we have traditionally been respectful of our mothers and have been revering them for generations.

We didn’t need to set a single day aside for them. But then, we (Indians) tend to ape the West and what the West does needs to be done back home.
