It is normal to feel that you are not as accomplished as some of the people out there. Every person has his/her abilities and works within those. But if you think that you are less than the next person, you are very wrong. You have many traits that the other may be lacking. NEVER let yourself down or feel small. Because that means you are suffering from an inferiority complex which is very wrong.

What is an inferiority complex?

It happens when you assign less priority to yourself than others in qualities like how you look, skills and knowledge. Remember, you have certain traits that are missing in another person. It is a habit with its causes. It surges from some past unfavourable situation that later develops into a habit. However, this is something that doesn’t happen to every person who is targeted. Many manage to go through the process inferior-free. They don’t even recognise it and move ahead in life.

Causes

Skin colour: One of the main causes of inferiority complex happens to be related to skin colour. Some people tend to make friends only with those of the same race. They’re likely to intimidate others if they happen to be different. This can cause a sense of inferiority complex in them.

Self-doubt:

If you doubt your appearance and then someone says you’re looking weird and you go and believe that, you’d more likely to feel inferior. This is because the idea was already there in your head. Never self-doubt. Never have preconceived notions; ‘People will not like me’; ‘I am looking horrible in this dress’; ‘I am too fat’ already make you a defeatist even before the whistle is blown. If you think that people would not like you, you’d see hundreds of facts daily fostering that belief.

Handicapped:

Another cause of inferiority complex happens when someone is handicapped. But being handicapped doesn’t guarantee inferiority in a person.

Social standing: People sometimes draw lines when it comes down to social life. They make friends and associate only in what they think is social standing. If you go to this society, you’d discover that the lower classes become inferior to the upper class.

Being labelled names:

This is something that parents often do. If a child scored a lower grade and the mother says something like this: ‘Your friends is getting A-plus, you got a B. You’ll always remain stupid’.  The mother has planted the seed of inferiority in the child. Every time he fails a test, he may be thinking his mother was right.

Look around you:

You will see many people’s habits originating from inferiority complexes. In rare cases would you see a person who is not so perfect associating with others happily. Such people rarely look at their defects and this makes it easy for them to associate with others.

Interestingly, there’s a psychological reason behind this inferiority complex. Whenever they try to associate with someone in nature, it is like attracting people’s attention down the street. Another good example of compensating for an inferiority complex can be clearly seen with people suffering from poor self-confidence. If you watched, you’d see that people who lack self-confidence are less likely to find someone appealing if person lacks self-confidence. This is the inferiority complex they’re trying to compensate for.

Human beings, especially Indians, find it difficult to love themselves. Remember, in the movie Kabhi Khushi, Kabhie Gham? Poo says: ‘I am my best friend’. Be that person. Look at yourself in the mirror and say you love yourself. If you don’t love yourself, how will the others? We tend to find others appealing when they possess something we’re unable to see in ourselves. Lacking self-confidence is the inferiority complex you are wishing to satisfy. All you are trying to do is compensate for your weakness. This makes you feel better about yourself.

Compensating for an inferiority complex also targets love relationships. Do you know that many relationships you see today are fostered by an inferiority complex? People believe that inferiority complex is one of those habits which can’t be combated. Remember, an inferiority complex is a habit and habits can be broken. It is just another habit people harbor which has its cures as well.

Overcome inferiority complex

No person is born inferior. The idea was born when people started seeing others as more superior than themselves. People get offended when they are criticised for their looks. People say things to get a rise out of the other person. Usually, people suffering from jealousy and poor self-esteem are more likely to criticise another in order to feel superior.

And why should you not listen to people who say hideous things about you? Why should you ignore them? Well, what if the intention of the comment was to make you feel weird because they were jealous? What if they were even wrong in the first place? The first rule to overcome an inferiority complex is to ignore people’s words, especially those who don’t even know you.

People who are unable to overcome inferiority complex face it from unknown sources. If you know why you’re feeling this way, tackle it immediately. There have been instances where people have gone broke and it took them years to sort their finances because they spend thousands of rupees in buying cosmetics and trying to look perfect but never achieving it.

Nobody is perfect and no amount of make-up can make you look that way. There will always be people who will find fault with how you look. Too much make-up; too little make-up; too much lipstick; not the right shade of blush; the foundation not matching the skin tone the list is endless and so is the range of make-up. You will go broke but you will never be able to satisfy your critics. Learn to love yourself, blemishes and all. This doesn’t mean you live and look like you just got out of bed though!.

So, what if you’re a shy person and find it difficult to talk to people when you are in a crowd? What if you feel that people will make fun of you when you approach them and try to talk to them? Get out of your shell and start going out. Forget what people will say. Learn to greet others and initiate a conversation. The same holds true of how you look. Start doing light make-up only if necessary. Dress in what makes you feel good yourself. Be comfortable.

Leave things if they can’t be changed

Sometimes it is better to leave things the way they are. What if you have a visible burn mark? What if you have a limp? What if you have a lisp? You can’t go back to correct these. What you can do is get past it and ignore it and get on with your life. Not every situation is under your control and sometimes things are better left the way they are. What is under your control is how you think and how much you let others control your life and your thoughts. Just ignore people who make you feel inferior. Be in the company of people who make you feel special and unique.

While almost all green plants can be kept indoors, some plants need more attention than others which can be cumbersome if you have a busy schedule. But that doesn’t mean you can’t surround yourself with greenery. Let’s look at some best indoor plants for a home in India.

Rubber tree plant

It is fairly easy to maintain but is fussy when it comes to the amount of water it needs. Here is what you need to know if you have this plant. Rubber plants are rainforest specimens. While they need consistent moistness, they don’t want it to be soggy. Ensure that the pot the plant is in has adequate draining holes.

Use a dish under the pot lined with pebbles to catch extra water. This will keep the roots from sitting in water but provide the humidity as the water evaporates.

Croton plant

Its beautifully patterned leaves can brighten any space. Now that the rains are here in full force, it is important to ensure that you take care of all your plants. Overwatering can lead to root rot. An important thing to keep in mind is that the pot is well-drained. There is moisture in the air, overwatering will harm the plant. Croton also needs at least six to seven hours of sunshine but excess heat will damage its leaves. Try and keep the plant either East or West facing to make sure that the leaves don’t lose their colour.

English Ivy

It looks pretty and while it may look like it is an easy plant to look after, it is not the case. Like any other plant, this plant too will rot and its leaves will turn brown if you overwater them. Before you water it, check the soil. If it is moist, don’t water it. Make sure that the soil is loose and is kept in a well-drained pot. The plant grows in bright light but it is away from direct sunlight. It is a beautiful plan that can be kept inside the home; potting it in a hanging basket is an excellent way to enjoy the beauty of this plant.

Fern

The delicate curled leaves that unfurl into long, lacy fronds look pretty. Go into the forest and you will find ferns carpeting the floor. They also make a great houseplant. They can grow in any kind of pot — clay to hanging baskets to ceramic and don’t require full sun to thrive.

But Indian weather is different. A plant that may live happily in any other environment needs a lot of care here. They love moisture. During the rainy season make sure you don’t overwater the plant or the roots will rot. You can even spray water on the leaves to lock the moisture in. You can keep this plant in the bathroom or even the kitchen.

Green Aralia

One of the most important things to keep in mind if you have a green aralia is that it has to be kept away from cold drafts and windows during the winter months to ensure that it thrives. It needs a feed once every other month during the spring. During the summer months, the plant needs liquid fertiliser. However, be careful if you buy this plant; it is mildly toxic to humans and pets. Ingestion can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

They are best as landscape plants. While watering aralia which is indoors, deep water is only when the soil is nearly dry. One of the most important things to keep in mind if you have a green aralia is that it has to be kept away from cold drafts and windows during the winter months to ensure that it thrives.

Pitcher plant

It is not always possible to ensure that the plant that you bring is going to live. Hence, it is important to take care of it properly. Let’s take the pitcher plant. So how does one take care of it if one wants to keep it indoors even if it is a carnivorous plant?

Depending on the species, some require full sunlight and those that originate in the floor of the rainforest may need filtered light. It requires moist soil, and keeps the potting soil moist, but not soggy. Allow the pot to drain thoroughly after watering and never let the pot stand in water or the roots will rot.

Why we celebrate mothers day?

It is said that the need to celebrate this day arose in the 1900s. Back then a daughter – Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis – to honour the sacrifices made by the mothers made for their children started this holiday.

It is said that Jarvis organized the first Mother’s Day service of worship and celebration at Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, the US which serves as the International Mother’s Day Shrine today.

Did you also know that different countries celebrate this day in different months? Some countries celebrate this day in March. Mother’s Day in Egypt is celebrated on March 21, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. In Georgia Mother’s Day is celebrated on March 3.

In some countries, the date is adopted to signify religion, like Virgin Mary Day in Catholic countries. Other countries selected a date with historical significance. For example, Bolivia’s Mother’s Day is a fixed date, commemorating a battle in which women participated to defend their children. Or in Russia where it is celebrated as International Women’s Day instead of Mother’s Day.

In India, the concept of celebrating Mother’s Day is new. This could be because we have traditionally been respectful of our mothers and have been revering them for generations.

We didn’t need to set a single day aside for them. But then, we (Indians) tend to ape the West and what the West does needs to be done back home.
